2015 Women’s Ice Hockey Beanpot

Hockey is always one of my favorite sports to shoot. While the men’s players in college are trying to show off for NHL scouts, the women’s players seem to play even harder as they vie for a spot on their country’s Olympic team. On this ice for this year’s women’s Beanpot finals between Boston College and Harvard were an number of Olympians. Harvard ended up winning, handing BC it’s first loss of the season.

The Game: Harvard vs. Yale

Some rivalries in sports are so historic that the locals simply refer to the matchup as “The Game.” The annual Harvard/Yale football game is the original example of this. The Game has been played annually since 1875.

For this iteration, The Game was held at Harvard Stadium in Boston. The Crimson came in undefeated, and Yale had only one loss. The winner would be crowned the champion of The Ivy League. In addition, The Game hosted ESPN’s College Gameday, adding pressure to the players on both teams.

This year, I was tasked with spending the whole day shooting the pageantry and atmosphere that surrounded the matchup for Harvard University. For the 12:30 PM kickoff, I arrived at the stadium at 5:30 AM in order to shoot the setup for College Gameday, as well as to capture the sunrise over the historic Harvard Stadium.

College Gameday is known for having fans with witty signs in the background of the set. As the fans began to arrive around 7 AM, I looked around for some of the best pro-Harvard (and anti-Yale) posters, as well as just general photos of Harvard fans:

Harvard Football vs. Yale 11222014After a long morning, the game was finally about to begin. I spent some time shooting the action on the field before the game:

Eventually, with just a bit of time left on the clock, Harvard scored a game-winning touchdown off of a beautiful pass to the sideline I was luckily covering:

Second Chance: The Fall Experimental Football League

The brand new four-team FXFL rolled into Boston this past weekend with a game between the Boston Brawlers and a traveling team, the Blacktips. The league touts itself as “a developmental platform for players, coaches and referees,” essentially giving a second chance to players and coaches who were cut and left out of NFL squads.

Held at one of my favorite stadiums to shoot at, Harvard Stadium, the game only attracted a handful of fans, even though former college football stars could be found on both rosters. Household names of years past, including former Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd and Mizzou kicker Jeff Wolfert, can be found on the depth charts.

While the football was a bit sloppy, the players really got their emotions into the game. These are some of my favorite photos from the night:
