Israeli-Hamas Conflict Spills Over Into Boston – Part 2

This is the second blog post in a series. Part 3 will be released in the coming days.

You can read Part 1 of this series, here.

Following the first protest in front of the Israeli Consulate, I was assigned to shoot a group of pro-Israel students who were going to a hardware store to support the store’s choice to continue selling Sodastream, an Israeli company. The hardware store is often protested against by pro-Palestinians who believe that they should not sell the Israeli product.

The event escalated when police had to be called in to search for a man who assaulted a pro-Israel activist. Besides that, the event was actually rather uneventful, with just a handful of pro-Israel activists getting into a brief argument with the two Palestinian activists who came.

A group of pro-Israel activists, mainly made up of local students, counter protest a recent pro-Palestinian campaign to boycott a local store. The pro-Palestinian activists disagreed with the store's decision to sell Sodastream, an Israeli company. The pro-Israel group responded by purchasing a number of Sodastream products at Tags Hardwear on July 13, 2014 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A few days later, I was called in to cover a pro-Israel rally on the Boston Common. Police estimated that about 1000 people attended on the pro-Israel side, and only one or two on the pro-Palestinian side:

Even when I’m on assignment to shoot a certain event, I’m also aways looking for feature photos that could be used for other things, or that can be used to show the atmosphere outside of the event. As I was packing up to leave the rally, I noticed the bright mist of a large water fountain and snapped this:Pro-Israel Rally in Boston 07182014

Israeli-Hamas Conflict Spills Over Into Boston – Part 1

This is the first blog post in a series. Part 2 will be released in the coming days.

With the recent events in Israel and the Gaza Strip gearing up rather than cooling down, people around the world have been gathering in public and private to express their support for one side or the other. This remained true in Boston, where there have been events held almost daily related to the conflict. I have been covering these protests, meetings, and rallies for The Times of Israel. You can find more photos of mine from the events on their website.

Following the events I photographed in my last blog post, I was first assigned to cover a pro-Palestinian protest in front of the Israeli Consulate in Downtown Boston:

Police had to get involved after supporters of the opposite sides got too close to each other. This pro-Palestinian woman is being searched for by The Boston Police Department for assault:

The police had to step in again when the larger pro-Palestinian group ignored the police lines, and crossed the street to swarm the smaller group of Israel supporters, largely made up of local students. The BPD later admitted that they dropped the ball:Boston Pro Palestinian Protest 07112014The next week, Consul General of Israel to New England Yehuda Yaakov met with the pro-Israel group to express his thanks for their activism, and to share his thoughts on the conflict:

Boston Responds to the Murders of Three Israeli Teens

Vigil in memory of murdered Israeli teens 06302014

Earlier this month, three Israeli teens were kidnapped on their way home from school. The event sparked outrage in the international pro-Israel community, starting the hashtag #BringBackOurBoys.

Unfortunately, the outcome was not positive. The bodies of Gilad Shaer, Eyal Yifrah and Naftali Fraenkel were found a couple of weeks after the June 12th kidnapping and murder.

The international community did not forget. Vigils and memorials were quickly organized to remember the murdered innocent boys. I spent two nights covering Boston’s reaction for The Times of Israel, first a student organized vigil at Boston University, and later a community memorial in a local Synagogue.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the remembrances:
